  1. Will you be involved in the writing of Doc Martin Series 5? I ‘m from Southern California and have become completely enamored with the Doc Martin Series. Surely Doc Martin will become part of the Minghella legacy. What a wonderful gift! Thank you.

  2. Thanks for kind words. I’m not working on the series nowadays – and haven’t for some years now. Very proud of it, though. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. Dominic

  3. Dear Dominic…I have been bed bound for most of the day for many years, and to find the Doc Martin series was more than a delight, it was a gift to people who are so tired of the nonsense that writers today are calling talent. You have a gift that exhibits real talent. It takes brains, thoughtfulness and humor. You avoided the twelve year old little boy mentality; e.g. (Having to use all coarse and rude expletives and almost pornographic video). Please accept my thanks for bringing pleasant moments to me in watching the series.

I am starting to write a novel based on my mother’s life. She is one of 17 children who was born in Swansea, Wales and lived by the docks. I have never done anything like this before. I have so much information, but I do not know how to start. I was thinking of getting a co author. Are you interested?

    Sincerely, Bonnie

  4. Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for your message and I’m so glad that you have enjoyed the show. You’re right – it is a challenge to write this kind of ‘light’ drama; many of the usual tricks aren’t available so it can be tricky to pull off. That’s probably why so few comedy-dramas are commissioned these days.

How lovely of you to think of me as a co-writer for your book, but that’s not my forte. I wish you luck with it though – 17 children? Wow! No wonder you don’t know where to start!

    Very best,
    DM

  5. I love the show. How does it work with you as the creator and then there are various writers? Do you create the plot and the writer writes the dialogue? Or what? I’m very curious b/c it all hangs together so well.

Thank you for a delightful show! I’m so glad another series is in the making.

  7. Hello Beth and thank you for your kind message. I’m so glad you like the show. It is some time since I left the show and if it still hangs together, that is to the credit of the writers and producers and cast and crew who carry the DM torch. (They won’t do it forever, so enjoy it while it lasts!)

  8. Dear Dominic,

Recently, I read that the Doc Martin series is being remade for the American audience. I realize that you are no long writing for the series but I don’t know who else to contact with my suggestions. If you have the time and the inclination, please tell them not to mess with Mother Nature for she frowns on such meddling.

In the guise of Doc Martin, you have created a genuinely funny and heart-warming character surround by equally genuine and heart-warming but quirky town-folks. To tinker as if one can improve on perfection is our society’s failing. Change is not always for the better and often it is for the worse. Our curmudgeonly friend Doc Martin’s would say, “Get out of here” as if he were expelling Satin from his midst.

    Here a few suggestions:
    1) Leave the Haemophobia alone: as one who studied psychoanalysis, the Haemophobia is but a symptom which can be replaced by other symptoms if needs be. It serves a purpose: it is a defense mechanism which protects the psyche and as such needs to be supported (that, in my opinion, is the seminal point.)
    2) “Behaviour modification” must come from within not be imposed from without. How to go about helping a patient modify his own behaviour can be discussed later. But in the end that modification must be accepted and the work must be done by the patient. He is more than qualified to do this modification.
    3) Dr. Ruth Ellingham would be the perfect person to do informal coaching: she trained and from what has been revealed thus far Martin has at least on one occasion sought out her professional diagnosis. He might take her advice seriously.

Presently, I am working on an case study of Doctor Martin Ellingham from a Modern Psychoanalytic perspective. Modern Psychoanalysis rests on some but not all of the fundamental principles of Freud’s (classical, traditional) psychoanalysis. Unlike Freudian analysis, the Modern variety does not use interpretation as it cornerstone.

Thanks again for reading thus far,

    Cecelia

Tell him for me since it is not likely that I will ever speak with Martin Clunes that he, in my absence should make the case to protect Doc Martin from becoming one more politically-correct lost soul.

  9. Dear Helen, Thanks for your message. How fascinating that you are working on a case study! And let’s hope the American version keeps what’s good – and makes it not just as good, but better. Dominic
